Installing Outdoor Security Cameras

Installing outdoor security cameras protects your home or business and can give you and your family the peace of mind that you need to sleep easy at night.  With new technology, installing these cameras is easier than ever.  Even most three to four camera systems can be setup yourself with little to no handyman skills in less than an hour.  From picking out your system to actually getting it working, follow these simple steps to make installation a snap.

The first thing that you need to look for, even before you buy your cameras is good place to install your cameras.   Front door and driveways are great places but also think about putting cameras in darker, harder to see areas of your property.  Find out the areas where you plan to mount the cameras.  In most circumstances, you will want to make the cameras easily visible because a large amount of the benefits from owning an outdoor security camera is from deterring would be criminals and stopping break-ins before they happen.

After you’ve found out where you want to place your outdoor security camera system, you need to pick out which ones you want to buy.  Figure out what you want to do with the system, and if you need to install more than one or two cameras, you can save money and aggravation by buying a kit that includes all the cameras and routers that you will need.  This will make sure that all the cameras are meant to hook together and you won’t have to worry about any compatibility issues.  If you really are looking at saving some money, you can instead work electronics that you already own, like TVs and DVRs into your security system.

When you install the camera, the most important part of the process is actually mounting the camera.  Especially if you are in a bad neighborhood or have experienced vandalism or theft in the past, make sure to put the camera up high.  This places it out of reach of vandals and makes sure that people can’t disable the camera.  Even though you’re placing the camera out of reach, make sure that you’re still getting a good viewing angle from it.  The camera won’t do you any good if the areas you’re trying to watch aren’t in the frame or aren’t focused.

After you’re done installing the camera, you need to setup the DVR and check the feed.  Connecting most cameras to the receiver and your DVR today is plug and play and shouldn’t require much in the way of technical knowledge.  Once your cameras are plugged into the DVR, you can setup the cameras to record motion, all footage, or a still every few seconds.  Choose the option that best suits your security needs.  Finally, check the feed from your cameras.  If you have outdoor wirel, make sure that there’s no signal disruption or noise from other wireless appliances.  Also make sure that the lighting in the area is adequate for the camera to work.  If not, you may need to install a motion sensor light that fires at the same time the camera does to capture good images.

Installing outdoor security cameras is quick, easy, and relatively painless.  If you follow these tips you will be able to get your system up and running in no time with relatively little hassle.
