Outdoor Security Camera Systems vs Alarm Companies

If you own a home or a small business, there are two main ways that you can help protect it from unwanted intrusions. You can either install an outdoor security camera system or use an alarm company to keep your home safe. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but in terms of long-term cost and effectiveness outdoor security camera systems are the best hands down. They keep your home just as safe at a fraction of the price.

Before you actually go about figuring out whether to install a security camera system or use the services of an alarm company, always talk to the law enforcement in your area and ask them questions about the types of break-ins they usually get. In particular, try to figure out the answers to these questions:

  • How many break-ins are there in your neighborhood?
  • What types of homes are broken in to?
  • What alarm companies are the best?
  • Does the local police respond to alarm calls? If so, how fast are they?
  • What does the police officer use to protect his family?

Once you know the answers to these questions, you’ll better be able to determine how you would like to protect your own home.

In most areas, police response time to alarm calls is either non-existent or very slow, usually around five to ten minutes. Any experienced thief will know that they have about this long before the police show up, so if there is something in your house worth stealing that they can get to quick enough, an alarm system will not protect it.

The real value in burglar alarms is in their deterrent factor. Thieves, like lions and other predators, try to prey on the weak because they’re the easiest targets. They look for homes that don’t have a lot of outdoor lights, dogs, activity levels, or security systems. They also try to find homes with entrances that are secluded from view and that have an easy escape route.

So, if the police likely won’t catch a thief red-handed and the main purpose of the alarm system is deterring the break-in from actually happening, why are you paying the monthly fees to the alarm company! They not only charge you for monitoring your home on a monthly basis, but they also charge for installation and equipment. A better solution is to install an outdoor camera security system that is highly visible so that potential thieves can see it and will keep moving along. In the chance that your home is broken into, you may even have a picture of the thief that can help law enforcement. For extra security, you could also just install a sign from a security company, which can have the same effect as the whole system being installed, and get a dog as well. You’ll have a new best friend and an alarm system at the same time.

Before you decide to commit to any kind of alarm or camera system, always make sure that you talk to the law enforcement in your area. Some municipalities may have quicker response times for alarm calls or they may otherwise be more effective. However, in most areas outdoor security camera systems will be the best, most cost-effective way to keep you and your family sleeping safe and sound at night.
