Wireless Security Camera Systems Buyer’s Guide

If you don’t already have any cameras installed at your home or business and need to buy more than one or two, you should look at wireless security camera systems to make the process of setting up the system and installing it easier.  Buying a kit instead of buying the cameras all individually has a couple benefits over buying the parts individually.  You won’t have to deal with compatibility issues, the components will complement each other, and you’ll probably save some money by buying a package as well.  A wireless camera security system can come with a lot of different components, so make sure that you find one that has all the components that you need and cameras that are powerful enough to protect your belongings.

Perhaps the most important is that you’ll be sure that you won’t run into any compatibility problems with your cameras because they’re designed to work together.  Depending on how difficult the cameras that you try to tie together, this could save you hours of frustrating time spent wondering why the camera, software, and receiver all simply won’t tie together.  You’ll also make sure that you’ll get at components that complement each other and most manufacturers throw in significant savings when you buy the system all at once.  This can add up to a lot if you buy a few cameras now and then one a little later, and a few more a couple months later.  If you want to put up a system to make sure that your personal or business property is completely protected, spring for the whole package now and save some money on costs.

A wireless security camera systems will usually come with anywhere from two to sixteen cameras, a quality monitor, power supply, receiver, and a DVR to record the data.  This is the bar minimum that you will need to setup an effective system.  Some systems will come with useful extras like a remote control for the cameras, brackets to make camera installation easier, software that can control the cameras, and possibly hard disks to backup the data.  What kind of package you get will be determined by your individual needs and wants and how secure your need your property to be.

What to Look For

When you’re comparing package, the two most important parts of any wireless home security camera systems will be the receiver and the camera housing.  The receiver will determine how clear your image is and how much background noise interferes with the system, while the housing will protect the camera itself from the elements.

Try to get the strongest receiver that you can for your budget and stay away from the 2.4 GHz frequency if it is at all possible.  Having a stronger signal will allow you to be able to have a greater range to place your cameras.  Just make sure with this that your signal is locked down and secure because your signal will be able to be tapped into from further away.  The 2.4 GHz frequency is a huge no-no for cameras because so many other consumer electronics use waves that are close to this frequency.  Microwaves, cordless phones, and wireless access points, at least one of which is in almost every home or business now, will all interfere with the signal from your wireless camera.  Instead opt for a camera system that uses a frequency that is prone to less outside interference.

Your housing is important as well because without proper housing your camera will be rendered almost useless in even the next light rain shower you have.  Make sure that the case is metal and has an IP rating of at least 65 to protect against water and dust.  Metal cases are the best for waterproofing, but they also interfere with wireless signals so  make sure that there’s a booster antenna mounted on the outside of the case.

Finally, when you first get the system, make sure that you test out the signal strength before your permanently install it or otherwise can’t return it.  A camera that’s rated for a signal at 300 feet is usually only this far with a clear line of sight.  If the wireless signal needs to go through walls or other obstructions, the distance away that you can put the receiver greatly diminishes.

Buying wireless security camera systems can save you time, money, and makes installing your system a snap.  Make sure that the system comes with all the extras that you’ll need, a quality receiver, and durable housing so that you get the best system for your money and situation.
